LASEMD: THE GENTLE LASER TREATMENT THAT ACTUALLY WORKS

Calling all our glow-getters. In this intimate account of a transformational skin treatment, we break down the hows, whats, and whys of laser-powered skincare.

SKIN DIARIES is a new in-house column at NBGA focused on delving first-hand into the futuristic and ever-evolving landscape of skincare. Dermatologist, facial esthetician, skincare experts, and clean-science backed treatments will be tried and tested.

The beauty landscape is constantly changing, evolving, and expanding–a fact that is thrilling for some, and totally confusing for others.  At NBGA, our goal is to create a skin lexicon that can be used as a referential guide for those with a curiosity for clean, science-based skin care methods that are maybe more on the advanced side. Sometimes a classic Sephora product review doesn’t cut it–we want step by step accounts, as intensely detailed and specific as if we were talking on the phone with a girl friend, about the reality of the treatments we’re considering. Will it hurt? How to prepare our skin beforehand? How much does it cost? How many treatments are needed? Does it work the same way for dark versus pale skin? How long did it take for you to see results? Recovery time?

No matter your skin story, we’ll be going undercover to explore the dermatologist and expert-backed skincare treatments that might be what can help you out with hyperpigmentation, acne scars, dull skin texture, brown spots, redness; the list goes on. And is it possible, anyways, beyond the age of sixteen, for our skin to bounce back with restored suppleness, to radiate glowiness, and health?

This thought is what led me to discovering the life-changing benefits of LaseMD lasers.

Before undergoing any skin treatments myself, I found myself relentlessly Googling different key phrases and search terms, looking everywhere online for a pre-existing heaven-sent article that could answer all or most of my questions in one go. I was hungry for information and first-hand insight that came from actual lived experiences. I wanted to know what to expect on a tangible level.

I’d been frequenting the incredible New York-based Glo Spa religiously for my laser hair removal sessions, and during my time there I’d been lucky enough to strike up super insightful conversations with one of the founders of the spa, Sai. We’d discussed all things skin and skincare, and most importantly, skin treatments–the good, the bad, and the ugly. Which treatments are truly worth it, and which treatments can be boiled down to hype? Sai has flawless skin–as airbrushed and spotless as skin can get IRL. She was open and transparent with me about her own battle with adult acne and the long-lasting change she was able to achieve with LaseMD

I was curious about potentially experiencing the effects of laser treatment myself. I’d been searching for a pragmatic solution to the sun damage around my eyes, and Sai confirmed that she felt LaseMD would be a great option for my primary concerns. It didn’t take long to convince me. By the end of that session, my next appointment was booked!

In the remaining sections of this article, I will be breaking down for you everything that you need to know if you’re considering this treatment for yourself.

Locate your skin concerns

I consulted with the Founder of NYC-based Glo Spa, Sai, who informed me on the wide range of skin concerns that LaseMD can effectively address. Whether you are looking to repair the visible effects of sun-damage, reduce fine lines, or infuse life back into a dull or uneven complexion, LaseMD lasers offer an all-inclusive solution. Most patients opt for facial treatments, but popular areas for treatment also include the neck, décolletage, hands, and arms.

Prep like a pro

Preparing for my Fraxel laser treatment, I meticulously checked my skin for any signs of extensive breakouts, open wounds, or infections. Following Sai’s expert advice, I refrained from using any products containing retinoids for at least one week leading up to the procedure. Additionally, I discovered that booking the appointment during the winter months is highly recommended, as it is advised to avoid Fraxel laser treatments during the summer.

The treatment process

Before treatment began, I felt both excited and apprehensive, and I chose a spa that I was comfortable with as the location for my first treatment. Glo Spa NY is one of my favorite places to go in New York because everyone is so attentive, knowledgeable, and caring, you instantly feel at home with them. Sai, my trusted guide, brought me to one of the intimate spa rooms, providing me the space to prepare myself and get comfortable pre-treatment. Tucked into the blanket and sinking into relaxation mode, Sai started off with cleaning/disinfecting my skin and applying a numbing cream that worked its magic in less than thirty minutes.

Once the skin was fully numbed, the procedure was ready to start. Depending on your skin tone, the laser is adjustable to maximize effectiveness for your skin type. The magic lies in the wavelengths that the laser sets out. It focuses on eradicating pigmentation and sun damage, while also penetrating deeper to tackle fine lines, texture irregularities, and small acne scars.

Unlike topical treatments, the LaseMD has the ability to break up scar tissue and pigmentation, revealing smoother, more refined skin texture while boosting your collagen at the same time.

Does it hurt?

The sensation was not painful at all. The laser interacting with the skin created a sensation of “little zaps” and once the first three zaps are over, the feeling is barely noticeable. The portable fan you are given to hold during treatment helps cool down and soothe the skin.

Duration?

Some areas were targeted more, depending on where the sun damage was more intense, but overall Sai used roughly six rounds all over my face. The treatment was finished in 10 to 15 minutes. Once finished, my skin was slightly warm to the touch and looked rosy in the mirror. For the last step, she used the clinical hydra cool serum to relax and hydrate the skin.

Research the right establishment for you

After my experience, I talked to a couple of friends about LaseMD and was surprised that some spas/dermatologists perform just a single pass over the skin.

At Glo Spa, I counted 5-6 rounds of LaseMD and Sai, with meticulous attention to detail, individually stamped targeted patches with more pronounced sun damage. If you choose to embark on this treatment journey, make sure to ask around and conduct research to ensure that you will be receiving the most impactful treatment. And when in New York, you already know where to go!

Good to know:

If you are pregnant, you should wait before doing LaseMD, as the use of numbing cream is not advised during this delicate period. With your body already undergoing significant stress and hormonal fluctuations, definitely prioritize self-care, peace, and well-being at this time. Once you have entered the post-pregnancy phase, there is no harm in starting on your skin treatment journey.

The healing process:

The mechanism behind LaseMD is a fascinating one. During the treatment, the laser generates minuscule “columns of thermal destruction” within the skin. These columns stimulate the growth of fresh, healthy skin cells, effectively replacing old and damaged ones, and as a result, the skin undergoes a natural healing process that accelerates skin turnover, boosting collagen production, and culminating in a totally rejuvenated appearance. After the treatment, there is little to no down time.

On the first day, you may look a little red but that redness should completely evaporate by the next morning. On Day 2, my skin felt a bit like sandpaper. I could visibly see tiny dark spots on my skin throughout Day 2 to Day 4. They will be visible to you but nobody else, and you can wear makeup if necessary. Personally, I let my skin breathe and avoided wearing any products on my face.

After Day 4, your skin starts to peel and slowly reveals new fresh skin underneath. I also realized that pores clean themselves; under laser heat, black spots push themselves out. You can clean your face gently with a warm microfibre cloth after Day 4 to help get rid of dead skin.

Aftercare products:

Clinical hydra cool serum–only. Recommended for daily use post-treatment.

For the first initial 7 days post-treatment, it is crucial to avoid SPF on the skin because of its ability to clog the newly sensitive pores. We want the skin to breathe. On Day 7, gentle peeling can be incorporated into your routine to help wash away dead skin cells. Be extra gentle on your skin, with no direct sun exposure for a period of 3 weeks. Wear a hat for the first 7 days if it’s sunny, but it is recommended to stay out of the sun for 3 weeks after the treatment.

Post-treatment, I anticipated some downtime of three to five days. During this period, my skin appeared red, began to peel, and had a slightly scaly texture. I steered clear of harsh products and prescription acne treatments for about a week, opting for gentle cleansers and moisturizers instead. One piece of advice that truly resonated with me was refraining from peeling or picking at my skin, as it not only prolongs the healing process but can also hinder the desired results.

The final unveiling:

After a week, my skin begins to clear itself. It’s glowing. I can visibly see that some of my prior sun damage had totally faded. My complexion is clearer and more even. Overall, skin texture has significantly improved. At first, I did wonder if it was all in my head, but my feelings were confirmed when my friends started complimenting my skin. This treatment undeniably delivers; I recommend it to anyone looking to really invest in their skincare game.

What truly impresses me about this treatment is the ability to witness tangible results even after the first session. Glo Spa suggests a series of three treatments to maximize the transformative potential. More information about the treatment.
