Style Crush: Jacquemus SS18

It was nothing but sun, sea and nostalgia at the Jacquemus SS18 show, which transported the crowd inside the Musée Picasso (a cultural institution never before used for fashion) on a summertime getaway á la française. Immersing his collection in vivid reminders of his native South of France, Simon Porte Jacquemus not only delivered with his melange of fun and flirtatious shoes and accessories, but also his moving homage to his late mother — whose essence entirely inspired the show.

“I don’t think I ever saw my mother more beautiful than on evenings after the beach and probably when she was in love,” he wrote in his program notes. Mother and son would take a walk, visiting “souvenir shops filled with earrings, ceramics, sarongs and headbands.” — “La bombe,” he called her archetype — “I was looking at a photograph of my mother walking through the port one summer”, Jacquemus explained, surrounded by cameras, well-wishers and his memory-kissed models, “She had a scarf around her head, ceramic earrings and a wrap tied around her. She was always smiling and happy”.

And with such remnants of her free-spirit infusing the show, the collection itself featured an array of accessories, which gave us some serious beach-house vibes. From the major shade affording oversized sun hats, which look to stay on the agenda for many summers ahead, to the sculptural momento heels, we’re already feeling those summer breezes. The statement mismatched earnings were also a must have, as not a single earlobe was adorned with the same piece, but instead decorated with playful ceramic fruit shapes, and matching leather bags, installing a sense of fun into the otherwise eloquent collection. So though the designs may well have been an ode to his mother, their appeal is surely growing on girls everywhere since their arrival.
