The Best Sunscreens for Girls of Color that Won’t Leave You Ashy or Purple

There is this really strange myth floating around the Internet and into daily conversation about how people of color don’t need to wear sunscreen. I remember hearing this fallacy from friends and family as we discussed skincare routines (more like lack thereof) and the number of people who go without is astounding.

Yes, melanin does protect the skin to an extent, but it does not protect against skin cancer or the harmful UV rays that can cause unparalleled amounts of damage to our body’s largest organ. People of color – heck, everyone – needs to wear sunscreen. Not only does it protect against skin cancer and premature ageing, but it helps serums and potions do their jobs of fighting hyperpigmentation, uneven texture, or whatever issues your skin may be experiencing.

That being said, it’s important to note a key factor when it comes to picking out a sunscreen when you have more than a little melanin popping off: a chemical versus physical sunscreen. Physical sunscreens usually contain zinc oxide which is the main culprit in making dark skin girls look like one of the Gross sisters from The Proud Family. For that reason, this list will contain mainly chemical sunscreens and reapplication is key in order to prevent any sun damage.

Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch Water Resistant Sunscreen SPF 100 – $12.99

This SPF is the most accessible and affordable option on this list. Neutrogena’s Ultra Sheer Dry Touch boasts a dry touch feel and quick absorbency all while shielding you smoothly from the sun’s harmful rays.

Glossier Invisible Shield SPF 35

Glossier’s Invisible Shield consists of a clear water gel formula and instantly absorbs into the skin. In addition to preventing sun damage, this SPF works to neutralize harmful free radicals and keeps other junk out. It does not, however, promise you the beautiful, youthful glow of a Glossier model.

Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum SPF 30 – $65

This SPF does everything but file your taxes. Kidding, but the Murad Invisiblur Perfecting Shield Broad Spectrum blurs, primes, and protects leaving you with an amazing canvas to begin any makeup application. This SPF is great for those who want an SPF that does a little bit more to make their morning routine that much easier.

Coola Classic Face Organic Sunscreen Lotion SPF 50 – $32

The slight white tea scent of the Coola Classic Face Organic Sunscreen Lotion pairs well with the lightweight and long lasting, moisturizing formula. This SPF is great for Sporty Spice types and those who like to be outdoors for hours.
