Laura Callaghan | Illustration

This week’s No Basic Girl, artist Laura Callaghan, reminds us to stay bold. The London based artist is known for her hyper-detailed illustrations and unapologetically feminine girl gangs featured in most of her work. Often side-eyeing and with snacks on hand the chromatic women in her illustrations seem like cool-no-bullshit kind of girls we all want to be friends with.

And we have a feeling these characters will be pushing us outside our comfort zones this Fall and Winter season – from hairstyles to accessories these illustrations inspire. While it might be tempting to reach for our usual cream knits and black scarves as the weather begins to cool down, Callaghan’s work will be a friendly reminder to play with colors, prints and jewelry.

Earning her MA in Illustrations from Kingston University was only the beginning for the Irish illustrator. Her watercolour and ink works can be seen in Nylon, Bustle and Riposte Magazine with companies like MTV, Nike and Adidas Stellsport listed as clients – just to name a few. And we can definitely see why. The artist’s ability to capture and include the tiniest of details to create these poppin’ images is admirable: gold earrings, bright tops, cake, confetti – you name it, can all be found in one single image of hers. And TBH in the age of minimalism this is refreshing AF. We’ll always love simple aesthetics but its fun to mix it up every once in a while.
